Joaquin Phoenix Is Horrified By Dog-Leather

Posted on by PETA

“The footage that you’re about to watch of China’s dog-leather trade is one of the worst things I’ve ever seen,” begins the Grammy Award–winning and Oscar-nominated Hollywood actor Joaquin Phoenix in his new PETA Asia exposé released in the run-up to Lakme Fashion Week and Amazon India Fashion Week scheduled for March.

The footage was captured by a PETA Asia investigator at a facility that bludgeons and skins up to 200 dogs every day.

Most of the world’s leather comes from China, where there are no penalties for abusing animals killed for their skins.

Products made from dog leather are mislabelled, exported around the world and sold to unsuspecting customers. So if you buy leather clothing, remember this: there’s no easy way to tell whose skin you’re really in.

A long-time vegan, Phoenix shuns clothes made of any animal’s skin, wool, or fur and famously wore vegan leather boots while playing Johnny Cash in Walk the Line.
