Madhuri Dixit and Dr Shriram Nene Add Colour to a Pup’s Life by Adopting Him

As India gets ready to celebrate the festival of colours – Holi – Bollywood superstar Madhuri Dixit and her husband, Dr Shriram Nene, are adding colour to a dog’s life, too. When the celebrity couple heard from their pals at PETA India about an abandoned puppy who had been rescued by the group, they immediately decided to help by adopting him. The timing was perfect: he was adopted on their son Arin’s birthday. This isn’t the first time the family gave a home to a dog in need. Their dog Riya, who passed away, was also adopted. Two more rescued puppies in need of permanent, loving homes are still with PETA India.

“Abandoning a companion dog or cat is the cruellest thing to do. I’m happy we will be able to give this pup a new lease of life. I join PETA India in urging everyone who has the time, space, and resources to give a dog a lifetime of care to adopt from the street or a shelter instead of buying one.” – Madhuri Dixit

PETA India warns buyers that “pedigree” dogs have been purposely bred to have certain exaggerated physical traits, such as small noses or drooping backs, making them especially susceptible to many health problems, including hip dysplasia, heart defects, epilepsy, and eye and ear infections. In contrast, Indian “community” dogs, who often have a wonderful demeanour, are hardy and resilient and aren’t predisposed to health problems.

This isn’t the first time Dixit has teamed up with PETA India to help animals. She’s helped to rescue puppies who were drenched in the rain and helped a crow entangled in a wire . And after learning that elephants were being mercilessly killed in Assam, she sent a letter on behalf of PETA India to officials in that region.

Millions of animals are suffering from homelessness and fighting for survival on the streets every day. Pledge to adopt and never shop!
