‘Catmonger’ Serves Up ‘Kitten Meat’ Ahead of World Week for the Abolition of Meat

Ahead of World Week for the Abolition of Meat (25 to 31 January), a PETA India “catmonger” wielded a “butcher knife” and was seen selling fresh “kitten meat” in Kolkata. The demonstration made the point that all animals are sentient beings who feel pain and fear and that anyone who wouldn’t eat a cat shouldn’t eat fish, either.

Scientists have confirmed that fish feel pain just as acutely as mammals do, have long-term memories, are able to recognise themselves in a mirror, and communicate with each other using squeaks, squeals, and other low-frequency sounds that humans can hear only with special instruments. More fish are killed for food each year than all other animals combined, often in agonising ways – they’re impaled, crushed, gutted, or dropped into boiling water while still alive and conscious.

Everyone who goes vegan spares the lives of nearly 200 animals a year, dramatically shrinks their carbon footprint, and reduces their individual risk of suffering from heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. According to the United Nations, a global shift towards eating vegan is necessary to combat the worst effects of the climate catastrophe. PETA India offers a free vegan starter kit for those ready to make the switch.
