Senior Advocacy Officer

Position Objective:
To work at a senior level to advance PETA India’s campaigns and bring about policy-level changes in favour of animal protection

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Develop and execute high-level policy-oriented projects to stop industrial and other types of animal abuse
  • Provide strategic input, leadership, and expertise to advance animal rights with central government and state-level policymakers
  • Conduct in-depth research to advance projects, including by filing Right to Information applications and reviewing PETA India investigative findings
  • Draft compelling letters to and meet with policymakers about various animal protection issues to encourage positive changes
  • Coordinate with PETA India’s legal department as necessary to advance campaign-related efforts in court or to form arguments for policymakers
  • Take part in official policy committee meetings and discussions where possible
  • Draft or review reports to share with policymakers as required
  • Regularly update and maintain project-related agendas, timelines, contacts, and files
  • Work with local volunteers and other departments of the organisation, including public relations and online outreach, to advance project objectives
  • Respond to media queries and act as a media spokesperson when requested
  • Take part in other efforts, which may include a variety of tasks such as working with law-enforcement agencies or giving talks, as necessary to advance project objectives
  • Support other team members by sharing knowledge and skills and providing guidance when requested
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications:

  • Five years or more relevant experience preferred
  • Strong and sound understanding of India’s political workings and structure required
  • Must be at least a graduate in any discipline
  • Fluency in both English and Hindi (other languages a plus)
  • Previous policy advocacy, liaison, and negotiation experience strongly preferred
  • Previous public speaking experience preferred
  • Proven ability to work with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds
  • Proven thorough knowledge of all animal rights issues
  • Outgoing and personable manner
  • Excellent written communication skills in English, Hindi a plus
  • Proven ability to work independently
  • Excellent research and strategy-setting skills
  • Computer proficiency
  • Support for PETA India’s philosophy and the ability to advocate professionally for PETA India’s positions on issues
  • Ability and willingness to travel
  • Adherence to a healthy vegan lifestyle
  • Commitment to the objectives of the organisation
