Victory! SHEIN Bans Fur, Wild-Animal Skins, and Exotic Feathers After Push From PETA US
After hearing from PETA India’s US entity about how foxes, rabbits, ostriches, and other wild animals suffer in the fashion industry, China-founded and Singapore-based retail giant SHEIN has added third-party sellers to its company-wide ban on fur and wild-animal skins, which now includes any items made from ostriches, alligators, and other animals considered “exotic.”
Every rabbit-fur coat or crocodile-skin purse is made with the suffering of a thinking, feeling being who didn’t want to die. SHEIN made the right decision to ensure that its online store and marketplace are free from fur and wild-animal skins, and PETA urges all other hold-out companies to follow its lead.
Foxes rely on their bushy tails to spread scent to communicate, ostriches nurture their young for up to three years, and crocodiles are doting mothers who diligently protect their eggs from predators. PETA entities have released dozens of investigations exposing cruelty to animals exploited for clothing. Videos have revealed that workers imprison foxes and other animals in filthy wire cages for their fur, yank out the feathers of ostriches one by one, and hack at crocodiles’ necks and shove metal rods down their spines in a crude attempt to kill them for their skin.
SHEIN joins hundreds of major designers and retailers—including ASOS, Burberry, Canada Goose, Chanel, Macy’s, Nike, and Nordstrom—in banning fur and wild-animal skins. PETA entities are now rallying the public to urge Pharrell Williams, as Louis Vuitton’s menswear creative director, to follow the rest of the industry’s lead and ban wild-animal skins and furs from LVMH.
In February 2025, In a major victory for wildlife, the Government of India has accepted key recommendations made by PETA India aimed at significantly strengthening safeguards for various wild animals, including those protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 or the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Former Union cabinet minister and veteran parliamentarian Maneka Gandhi also advocated the recommendations. PETA India aims to ensure the reintroduction of the 3 Jan 2017 ban on imports of reptile skin, furskin of mink and fox, which was overturned on 7th January 2021.
