SAFE SEX FOR ANIMALS?PETA India Launches Provocative Ad About Birth Control for Stray Animals Holding a condom and appearing above the caption “Millions who desperately need protection from pregnancy can´t even get the condoms unwrapped”, Constance Marie – the hot star of American Family and The George Lopez Show – is featured in a new ad for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals India (PETA). The ad also urges people to “[s]ave lives by having your animal companions spayed and neutered”. The ad is a response to the animal overpopulation crisis in Bangalore and in other parts of the country, which has resulted in the arbitrary capture of dogs who are living on the streets. Studies conducted by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Animal Welfare Board of India have proved that mass sterilisation of community animals is the most viable solution to overpopulation. Dr K. Bogel, chief veterinarian of the public health unit of the WHO in Switzerland, says, “All too often, authorities confronted with the problems caused by these dogs have turned to mass destruction in the hope of finding a quick solution, only to discover that the destruction had to continue year after year, with no end in sight”. One female dog and all her puppies add up to a whopping 67,000 dogs in six years if none of them is spayed or neutered! People who have the time, money, love and patience to make a lifelong commitment to an animal should adopt from shelters rather than patronising pet stores or breeders. Every newborn puppy purchased from a pet store or breeder leaves one fewer home for the dogs waiting in animal shelters or roaming the streets. The WHO also recommends the mass vaccination of dogs as the only effective way to eradicate rabies in humans. Mass vaccination has helped lower rabies mortality rates in Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Sri Lanka. For more information, please visit http://www.wsdindia.org/FAQs/faqs.htm.
