Mumbai – In recognition of their compassion for animals, actor Sreeleela and cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin are the latest stars to win the title of Most Beautiful Vegetarian Celebrity from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals India (PETA India).
Using her star power to promote kindness to all animals, Sreeleela frequently discusses being meat-free in interviews—her favourite foods are masala dosa and idli—and, in photos shared with her millions of fans, Sreeleela can be seen spending time with goats, feeding cows, and caring for her beloved dogs. She also celebrated International Dog Day by posting pictures of her cherished companion animals. Ashwin, a vegetarian since birth, is well-known for treating his dogs like any other family member, with kindness and respect—and he helped draw worldwide attention to a heroic video of a man performing lifesaving CPR on an injured monkey by sharing the clip with his millions of social media followers.
“From cows to dogs to monkeys, animals have allies in Sreeleela and Ravichandran Ashwin, who promote compassion through what they eat and beyond,” says PETA India Vice President of Celebrity and Public Relations Sachin Bangera. “PETA India is delighted to honour them for showing everyone that kindness to animals is the most beautiful thing in the world.”
As PETA India reveals in the video exposé “Glass Walls“, chickens killed for food are often shackled upside down before their throats are slit. Cows and buffaloes are crammed into vehicles in such large numbers that their bones often break before they’re dragged off to the slaughterhouse, and pigs are stabbed in the heart as they scream. On the decks of fishing boats, fish suffocate or are cut open while they’re still alive.
In addition to being the compassionate choice, eating plants instead of animals reduces the risk of developing cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, and helps combat the climate catastrophe by lowering greenhouse gas emissions.
Past winners of the title (known as the Hottest Vegetarian Celebrity Award until 2020) include Riteish Deshmukh, Jacqueline Fernandez, Zeenat Aman, Jackie Shroff, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Rajkummar Rao, Alia Bhatt, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar, Shraddha Kapoor, Sonu Sood, Manushi Chhillar, Sunil Chhetri, Anushka Sharma, Kartik Aaryan, Vidyut Jammwal, Shahid Kapoor, Rekha, and Amitabh Bachchan.
PETA India – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETAIndia.com or follow PETA India on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
