To Mark Pro-Vegetarian Holidays, Nationwide Ad Blitz Challenges the Idea That Humans Are Superior to Other Animals

Kolkata – In honour of World Vegetarian Day (1 October), Gandhi Jayanti (2 October), and Vegetarian Awareness Month (October), PETA India is serving up some food for thought for people in Kolkata and other major cities, courtesy of new billboards that show a cow, a goat, and a chicken urging, “#EndSpeciesism” The national campaign denounces the belief that – despite their extraordinary talents, abilities, and intelligence – all other animal species are inferior to our own and that it’s acceptable to exploit them.

“From humans to hens, all animals are made of flesh and blood, feel pain and fear, desire freedom, love their offspring, have unique personalities, and value their own lives,” says PETA India Campaigns Coordinator Ayushi Sharma. “PETA India is encouraging people across the country to fight speciesism by valuing all animals for who they are as individuals, not for the ways they can be exploited.”

Because of human prejudice, highly social primates are caged alone in laboratories; billions of chickens, goats, and others are hacked apart in slaughterhouses every year; cows and buffaloes are crammed onto severely crowded vehicles and taken to be killed and turned into shoes; and elephants are beaten in order to force them to perform in travelling circuses.

PETA India – whose motto reads, “Animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way” – encourages everyone to help combat speciesism by buying cosmetics that weren’t tested on animals, choosing vegan food and fashion, staying away from animal circuses, and otherwise rejecting the exploitation of all animals.

The billboard is located at Park Street/Wood Street, visible to traffic from Chowringhee. PETA India is also posting its #EndSpeciesism ads in high-traffic areas in Hyderabad, Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, and Chennai.
