New Delhi — After hearing fromĀ People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals India (PETA India)Ā that fish were being caught in nets from containers as a play activity for children in violation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960, which prohibits causing fish suffering,Ā KidzzillaĀ Fuzion – an indoor kids play zone located atĀ RCubeĀ Monad Mall in New Delhi’s Rajouri Garden – has promptly removedĀ the activity and confirmed it will not be reintroduced.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā

ā€œChildren learn through play, which is why it is so important to teach compassion from an early age to ensure that animals are treated with respect,ā€ says PETA India Corporate Affairs Liaison Umang Sharma. ā€œPETA India thanksĀ KidzzillaĀ Fuzion for its compassionate business move and encourages other companies to follow suit by leaving fish in their natural habitats and never confining them for human entertainment.ā€Ā

PETA India notes that catching fish in nets distresses and can injure them and that keeping fish and other marine animals confined to cramped, filthy containersĀ deprivesĀ them of necessities – including ample oxygen and traumatizes them– leading to immense suffering and premature death. It is also a potential health risk if the water is stagnant or unfiltered, as it can spread bacteria and disease.Ā

Fish are smart, social animals with unique personalities, and they feel pain as acutely as mammals do. A recent study found that fish who are pulled from the water can experience disabling and even excruciating pain for at least 10 minutes before their brains shut down and they become unconscious. Dr.Ā CulumĀ Brown, a Macquarie University biologist who is studying the evolution of cognition in fish, says, ā€œFish are more intelligent than they appear. In many areas, such as memory, their cognitive powers match or exceed those of ā€˜higher’ vertebrates, including non-human primates.ā€Ā

PETA India – whose motto reads, in part, that ā€œanimals are not ours to use for entertainmentā€ – opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visitĀ PETAIndia.comĀ or follow PETA India onĀ X,Ā Facebook, orĀ Instagram.Ā
