PETA Ads Urge Diners to See All Animals as Individuals and Go Vegan
Delhi – In honour of World Vegan Month (November) and just in time for World Vegan Day (1 November), People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India has placed a billboard in Delhi featuring a chicken proclaiming, “I’m ME, Not MEAT. See the Individual. Go Vegan.”
The billboard – which is part of a nationwide ad campaign in which billboards featuring different animals commonly used for food will hit seven major Indian cities – is located at the Shadipur flyover alongside the Delhi Metro Blue Line, facing traffic travelling from Patel Nagar to Kirti Nagar metro station.
“Chickens are sensitive, intelligent animals who value their lives just as we value ours,” says PETA India campaigner Radhika Suryavanshi. “We can help stop the immense suffering these gentle birds endure in the meat and egg industries simply by choosing vegan meals.”
An estimated 1 million living, feeling chickens are killed to be eaten every four hours in India. As seen in PETA India’s exposé “Glass Walls“, chickens’ throats are often cut while they’re still conscious. These birds are raised in crowded, filthy sheds and are bred and given drugs to make them grow so big, so fast, that they often collapse under their own weight. At around 6 weeks of age, they’re transported to slaughterhouses, where their throats are slit with dull knives.
PETA India – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – has placed similar ads featuring a fish, a chicken, a pig, or a cow in six other major cities: Bangalore, Chennai, Guwahati, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Trivandrum.
