Mumbai – People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India founder Ingrid Newkirk’s new book, Animalkind: Remarkable Discoveries About Animals and Revolutionary New Ways to Show Them Compassion, has just been released by Simon & Schuster.
Did you know that cows communicate via subtle facial expressions, can operate water pumps with their horns, and jump for joy when they solve a puzzle? Or that dogs in the average home understand over 300 human words and have so many scent receptors in their noses that they can detect a thumb drive hidden in a metal box that’s in a steel cabinet? How about that fish “sing” underwater or that both male and female pigeons, who stay with one partner for life, make milk for their baby in their crops and take turns guarding their young? Animalkind draws on the wealth of new information that has emerged about who animals are – smart, perceptive, emotional, and empathetic individuals who have intricate communication networks and myriad abilities that humans are often oblivious to.
With a foreword by American sitcom The Big Bang Theory‘s Mayim Bialik, the book has received praise from many Hollywood and Bollywood stars:
“This is the book to buy, read, and give to others so that everyone finally sees why they should respect and cherish all animals.” – Anjelica Huston
“Animals are our neighbors on this planet – this book shows how we can become better neighbors.” – Alec Baldwin
“Like me, Ingrid Newkirk believes in protecting all the creatures we love.” – Sir Paul McCartney
“This book takes you by the hand and leads you, enchanted, into the wonderful world of diverse animal life.” – James Cromwell
“This is such a wonderful book, @sachinsbangera @petaindia! Thank you for sharing it with me.” – Dia Mirza
“[U]ntil one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened!” – Amitabh Bachchan
Newkirk is the subject of HBO’s award-winning documentary I Am an Animal, is the author of 13 books, was named one of Forbes’ 100 Most Powerful Women, and was a 1980 Washingtonian of the Year. She has also led PETA’s affiliates to numerous landmark victories for animals. She established PETA India in 2000 and retired this year from its board.
