Delhi’s Popular Kidzzilla Fuzion Removes Live Fish as Play Activity for Children After PETA India Appeal

After hearing from PETA India that fish were being caught in nets from containers as a play activity for children in violation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960, which prohibits causing fish suffering, Kidzzilla Fuzion – an indoor kids play zone located at RCube Monad Mall in New Delhi’s Rajouri Garden – has promptly removed the activity and confirmed it will not be reintroduced.

Catching fish in nets distresses and can injure them and that keeping fish and other marine animals confined to cramped, filthy containers deprives them of necessities – including ample oxygen and traumatizes them– leading to immense suffering and premature death. It is also a potential health risk if the water is stagnant or unfiltered, as it can spread bacteria and disease.

Fish are smart, social animals with unique personalities, and they feel pain as acutely as mammals do. A recent study found that fish who are pulled from the water can experience disabling and even excruciating pain for at least 10 minutes before their brains shut down and they become unconscious. Dr. Culum Brown, a Macquarie University biologist who is studying the evolution of cognition in fish, says, “Fish are more intelligent than they appear. In many areas, such as memory, their cognitive powers match or exceed those of ‘higher’ vertebrates, including non-human primates.”
