PlayUp India’s Cricket Fans Get PETA Message: ‘Circuses Are No Fun for Animals’

Mumbai –During the Champions League Twenty 20 (CLT20), hit mobile sport application PlayUp India launched a tie-up with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India aimed at combating the cruelty of circuses that force animals to perform unnatural tricks under the threat of punishment. When users log in to the social app to check CLT20 scores or message friends about their teams’ chances in the tournament, they’ll see PETA India’s videos and ads – starring actress and TV presenter Malaika Arora Khan, rapper Hard Kaur, actress Shilpa Shetty, and cricketer Wayne Parnell – that explain how animals used by circuses are subjected to chronic confinement and physical abuse.

“Everyone who logs into PlayUp India will be reminded that while our favourite cricketers all choose to participate in sport, elephants and other animals across the country are still beaten into performing tricks”, says PETA India Chief Functionary Poorva Joshipura. “PETA India encourages everyone to choose entertainment that’s kind, not cruel, and stick to watching talented human performers and sportsmen.”

Circuses use whips, heavy steel-tipped rods and other tools to inflict pain on animals and beat them into performing confusing, unnatural tricks – such as riding bicycles, standing on their heads or jumping through rings of fire – out of fear of violent punishment. And even when they aren’t performing, animals in circuses suffer a lifetime of misery: Their access to water, food and veterinary care may be severely restricted. Dogs and birds – who have their wings clipped so that they cannot fly – are confined to small cages. Horses are kept tethered on short ropes, and elephants are kept chained.
