Accessories are a fun way to reflect your personal style and liven up your look, and thanks to innovative companies like Made from Malai, animals and the environment don’t have to suffer for fashion. Made from Malai uses a non-toxic, sustainable, and biodegradable material developed from organic bacterial cellulose that grows on coconut waste to design intriguing purses, pouches, and bracelets. The company is so passionate about using only non-animal materials that it’s rewarding two people who, as determined by PETA India, provide the three most motivating reasons for not wearing or buying leather made from cows’ skin with products from its line. The first-place winner will receive a vegan pouch, and the runner-up will receive a bracelet.
To enter the contest, submit your reasons for forgoing cows’ skin using the form below.
In India, cows and buffaloes used for leather are crammed into vehicles so tightly that their bones often break, and many die before even reaching the slaughterhouse. In most slaughterhouses, cows and other animals are cut open with blunt, dirty knives in full view of one another on floors covered with faeces, blood, guts, and urine. Many are skinned and dismembered while still conscious.
In Kanpur alone, there are about 400 tanneries on the banks of the Ganges, and much of the dangerous waste that they produce – including carcinogenic chromium – is dumped directly into the river. In two districts of Tamil Nadu, tanneries have ruined the farmland of more than 36,000 farmers. Run-off from leather tanneries has also been linked to an increased risk of developing cancer, respiratory infections, and other illnesses in humans. In addition, leather production takes a deadly toll on animals.
In contrast, Made from Malai’s fresh designs and forward-thinking material render cruel and archaic cow- and buffalo-skin products obsolete. The coconut-derived material doesn’t sentence animals to death, destroy the environment, or poison humans.
Don’t get stuck in the past. Join the future with cutting-edge and cruelty-free companies like Made from Malai, and make a compassionate fashion statement by keeping animal skins out of your closet.
Good luck! But in our eyes, all leather-free fashionistas are winners.
