Indore: FIR Registered for Truck Running Over Dog, Following People For Animals (PFA) Indore Complaint and PETA India Intervention
After being alerted to a horrific incident of a truck slowly approaching and then running over a dog, causing the dog to die, while the truck failed to stop or ensure any help. PETA India and Priyanshu Jain of People for Animals (PFA) Indore worked with the Indore City Police to ensure that a First Information Report (FIR) was promptly registered.
The incident took place on 26 July 2025 at around 11 a.m. on a public street in Indore. Based on the CCTV footage of the incident, Annapurna Police Station registered an FIR under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960, against the truck driver. The deceased dog’s post-mortem was conducted the same day.
Section 325 of the BNS, 2023, categorises the maiming or killing of any animal as a cognisable offence and prescribes a punishment of imprisonment for a term which may extend to five years, or with a fine, or with both. Section 11 of the PCA Act, 1960, defines “cruelty” and makes the infliction of unnecessary pain or suffering upon any animal a punishable offence.
This incident highlights the importance of responsible driving and stopping should an untoward incident occur. However, in this instance, the slow speed of the truck upon approach also brings into question the driver’s motive. We commend Shri Ajay Naiyer, Station House Officer of Annapurna Police Station, for registering the FIR and sending a clear message that cruelty, reckless driving and leaving animals to suffer will not be tolerated.
