Raipur – Supporters of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals India (PETA India) will wear large community animal masks and give away free water bowls in Raipur on Friday to highlight the importance of helping animals avoid heatstroke and dehydration amid soaring temperatures.
Where: District Veterinary Hospital, Near OCM Chowk, Byron Bazaar, Raipur 492001
When: Friday, 15 May 2026, 4 p.m. sharp
“PETA India is encouraging everyone to make clean drinking water available to community dogs, cats, birds, and other animals, especially in the heat,” says PETA India Senior Manager of Vegan and Corporate Projects Dr. Kiran Ahuja. “These animals endure so many hardships, but we can all show them a little kindness – including by taking the simple, compassionate action of keeping a bowl of fresh water outside.”
Unlike humans, dogs can sweat only through their footpads and cool themselves by panting. Birds, which do not have sweat glands, pant or seek shade in order to cool themselves. High temperatures can cause heat stress and even result in death. On the streets of India, animals face numerous challenges – including hunger, abuse, and accidents – and many dogs and cats end up in shelters. Purchasing animals from breeders or pet shops only exacerbates the homeless-animal crisis.
PETA India – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way” – also encourages everyone to keep animal companions indoors when temperatures are high and never to leave them inside parked cars, where they can succumb to heatstroke within minutes.
