Kicking the Meat Habit Has 10 Men and 10 Women Sizzling With Passion and Compassion

Gangtok – As People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India’s ‘Cutest Vegetarian Next Door’ contest is brewing up, 27-year-old Gangtok-resident Omi Gurung, may just take home the prize. That’s because Omi has beaten out hundreds of other entrants from across India to become one of the 10 male contestants to advance to the final round. Two winners (one female and one male) will be crowned PETA’s Cutest Vegetarians Next Door, and each will be featured on PETA’s website and receive a sash and a trophy. All visitors to PETA’s website can vote for their favorite finalists.

“On average, vegetarians are slimmer and healthier than meat-eaters are – and over their lifetimes they save hundreds of animals from factory farms, slaughterhouses, and fishing nets”, says PETA India nutritionist Bhuvaneshwari Gupta. “One look at our radiant finalists proves that there’s nothing more attractive than compassion.”

Omi says, “The naked truth is that we are all animals. Vegetarianism will enrich and nourish your body, mind and soul. Green is not just a colour – green is a verb! It’s a lifestyle!”

In addition to causing animal suffering on a massive scale, eating meat and dairy products has been conclusively linked to heart disease, strokes, diabetes, cancer and obesity. Also, a United Nations report concluded that the meat industry is “one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global. By switching to a vegetarian diet, you can save more than 100 animals a year from this misery.

The deadline for voting is 7 November. The winners will be named on 11 November.
