Deonar Abattoir

Report on the Failure of Government and of Management to Meet Humane, Hygiene, Religious, and Legal Standards for Slaughter and Animal Handling

Mumbai's municipal slaughterhouse, Deonar, has been the subject of complaints for many years. PETA is opposed to slaughter, but the organisation believes that while consumer demand for meat and leather exists and while animals are going to be killed, transport and slaughter must at least be conducted in the most humane manner possible.

PETA representatives have visited Deonar on several occasions, sometimes announced and sometimes without announcing their presence, in an effort to obtain a clear picture of the day-to-day activities at the abattoir. This report details conditions found at Deonar during PETA's visits, observations made over time, and efforts PETA has made, without success, to improve conditions there.

Others who have visited Deonar include Dr John Gripper, a veterinarian and director of the UK's World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), Ms Miriam Parker, technical director of the UK's Humane Slaughter Association (HSA), and Mr Mohamed Hashim, chair of the Indian Council for Leather Exports (CLE).
