Whether for tourist rides or wedding ceremonies, horses are reduced to vehicles and props every day across India. Emaciated equines are driven to exhaustion, forced to haul heavy carriages across long distances and endure an assault of chaos and clamour. Many are forced into submission with illegal spiked bits that rip into their lips.

Earlier this year, a young mare died from exhaustion in Kolkata. She wasn’t the first. Between 2024 and 2026, sixteen horses were reported dead or severely injured in Kolkata due to similar abuse and neglect.
