New Delhi – Calling all scientists! A new grant opportunity from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India will offer one innovative scientist Rs 7 lakh to advance animal-free toxicology testing methods. The applicant whose research has the highest potential to replace cruel and deadly toxicity experiments on animals will be named the winner in February 2023.
“Countless animals are force-fed, poisoned, and killed in toxicology tests each year, even though humane research methods show more promise,” says PETA India Science Policy Advisor Dr Ankita Pandey. “With this grant, PETA India is celebrating cutting-edge research and helping to create a world in which animals will never have to suffer or die in laboratories.”
Toxicity testing for medicines, pesticides, and other chemicals has historically been conducted using animals due to government regulations and convention. In these tests, rats, mice, guinea pigs, rabbits, dogs, and other animals are forced to swallow or inhale massive quantities of a test substance or a chemical is smeared onto their eyes or skin.
Researchers from any sector (e.g. academia, industry, or government) can apply for the grant. Applicants should submit a proposal between 2,000 and 4,000 words, along with a curriculum vitae, to Dr Ankita Pandey at [email protected] by 6 January 2023. See the full submission guidelines here.
PETA India – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on” – opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETAIndia.com or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
