PETA India’s World Vegan Day Message: ‘Meat Is Murder’

Kolkata – In advance of World Vegan Day (1 November), dozens of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India supporters will lie “dead” inside outlines of cows, goats, chickens, pigs, and fish in front of a banner that proclaims, “Meat Is Murder. Go Vegan.”

Where:           At the gate to Victoria Memorial Hall (next to Rabindra Sadan), 1 Queens Way, Maidan, Kolkata 700 071

When:             Thursday, 31 October, 12 noon

“The butchering of tens of billions of land animals and up to trillions of fish each year for meat, a product we don’t need to eat, should be considered a crime,” says PETA India Campaigns Coordinator Ayushi Sharma. “This World Vegan Day, PETA India is urging everyone to put an end to senseless slaughter by choosing healthy and delicious vegan meals.”

PETA India – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – notes that every person who goes vegan spares nearly 200 animals a year immense suffering and a terrifying, bloody death in today’s meat, egg, and dairy industries. Chickens, cows, pigs, goats, and other animals killed for food are crammed into vehicles in such high numbers that many sustain broken bones, suffocate, or die en route to slaughter. At slaughterhouses, workers hack at their throats with dull blades, typically while they’re still conscious and able to feel pain.

Vegans are less likely to be afflicted with heart disease, diabetes, and cancer – all of which are widespread health problems in India – and are, on average, fitter and trimmer than meat-eaters are. In addition, animal agriculture is a leading cause of water pollution and land degradation, and a 2010 United Nations report concluded that a global shift towards vegan eating is necessary to combat the worst effects of climate change.
