Kicking the Meat Habit Has 10 Men and 10 Women Sizzling With Passion and Compassion

Ahmedabad, The competition to be named People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India's Hottest Vegetarian Next Door is heating up, and 30-year-old Ahmedabad resident Poonam Pandya may just take home the prize. That's because Poonam has beaten out hundreds of other entrants from across India to become one of 10 female contestants to advance to the final round. Two winners (one female and one male) will be crowned PETA's Hottest Vegetarians Next Door, and each will be featured on PETA's website and receive a sash and a trophy. All visitors to PETA's website can vote for their favourite finalists.

"On average, vegetarians are slimmer and healthier than meat-eaters are – and they save many animals a year from factory farms, slaughterhouses, and fishing nets", says PETA India nutritionist Bhuvaneshwari Gupta. "One look at our radiant finalists proves that there's nothing sexier than compassion."

Says Poonam, "A vegetarian diet is good for your health and helps reduce your intake of toxic chemicals. It also saves the lives of animals and helps save the planet by reducing air pollution."

In addition to causing animal suffering on a massive scale, eating meat and dairy products has been conclusively linked to heart disease, strokes, diabetes, cancer and obesity. Also, a United Nations report concluded that the meat industry is "one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global".

The deadline for voting is 5:30 pm on 25 November The winners will be named on 26 November.
