Man Takes Public Shower To Show Meat’s Devastating Impact On The Planet

In Advance of World Environment Day, PETA Reminds Residents and Tourists That Using Animals for Food Wastes Water and Produces Greenhouse Gases

New Delhi – Behind a shower curtain that reads, “1 kg of Meat = 1 Year of Showers. Clean Your Conscience: Go Vegan!” a member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India will shower outside Central Park at Connaught Place in New Delhi on Thursday. PETA’s point? That the best thing that people can do for the environment is to go vegan:

“It is impossible to ‘go green’ without going vegan”, says PETA campaign coordinator Bhuvaneshwari Gupta. “Just by changing their diets, concerned people can help protect the Earth, their own health and countless animals.”

Between watering the crops that farmed animals eat, providing drinking water for billions of animals each year and cleaning away the filth from farms, trucks and slaughterhouses, the farmed-animal industry places a serious strain on our water supply. A vegan diet requires only 300 gallons of water per day to produce, while a meat-based diet requires more than 4,000 gallons of water per day.

UN scientists have determined that raising animals for food generates more greenhouse-gas emissions than all the cars, SUVs, trucks, trains and planes in the world combined. And a recent report in World Watch magazine – titled “Livestock and Climate Change” – found that livestock and their by-products actually account for approximately 32.6 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, or 51 per cent of annual worldwide greenhouse-gas emissions. Raising animals for food also pollutes the water, destroys terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and requires massive amounts of energy and land.
