A PETA India undercover investigation reveals filth, disease and cruelty in India's fishing industry.
Watch the video that exposes the cruelty and suffering that go into every piece of leather, fur, wool, and exotic skin that you wear, then ask yourself and everyone you know, "Whose skin are you in?"
Ever since she returned to her roots in India after growing up in the US, Monica Dogra – along with her band, Shaa'ir + func – has taken the indie-music world by storm. Now the award-winning artist is testing new waters. In addition to appearing in her first-ever film, Dhobi Ghat – Monica now stars in a brand-new pro-vegetarian ad for PETA India. The ad shows Monica as she pets a chicken, and it reads, "Try to Relate to Who Is on Your Plate".
In an exclusive PETA India interview, Monica – whose acclaimed albums include New Day: The Love Album, Light Tribe and Mantis – reveals that she stopped eating meat after learning about what the animals used are forced to endure. "I remember reading something … at a vegetarian restaurant that I happened to go into about factory farming and particularly how chickens at that time were treated", she says.
Thank you, Monica, for thinking about animals! Chickens are inquisitive and interesting animals whose intelligence in some cases surpasses that of small children. When in their natural surroundings – away from factory farms – they form friendships and social hierarchies, recognise one another, develop pecking orders, love and care for their young and enjoy a full life that includes dust-bathing, making nests and roosting in trees.
But on factory farms, hundreds of thousands of chickens live in filthy, extremely crowded warehouses, where they are drugged and bred to grow such unnaturally large upper bodies that their legs often become crippled under the weight. When the time comes for slaughter, chickens are packed into lorries and transported to the abattoir in all weather extremes. Many birds remain conscious and are scalded to death in defeathering tanks.
Are you ready to go vegetarian with Monica? There's nothing to it – and we'll help you make the transition. All you have to do to get started is take the Pledge to Be Veg:
