India's Zoos: A Grim Report
Maharaja Shahaji Chattrapati Zoo
Kolhapur, Maharashtra
July 2005
No stand-off barriers are present to keep people a safe distance away from the animals.
The wall which keeps all the animals inside is only 4 feet high, making it easy for visitors to touch the animals.
Rabbits are housed in a barren enclosure with old food strewn all over the floor.
No signboards or educational materials are available.
This fence does not adequately keep people away from the animals.
Spotted deer, gazelles, black bucks, antelopes, emus, geese and peacocks are all kept together.
The rabbits (in the background) are kept in a bare-mesh cement enclosure.
