ConclusionThe state government, Dr Vishnupurikar, and the staff veterinarians have failed to do their jobs, thus continuing to permit Deonar to operate illegally in violation of Indian law and hygiene standards. Deonar management, government, and police have made it clear by their complete inaction that they do not feel obligated to take any steps to improve conditions. The ultimate responsibility falls on Mr. Karun Chandra Srivastava, the muncipal commissioner, who is responsible for ensuring Deonar's operation is humane and legal by incorporating the assistance of police and other government officials. The SolutionPETA is calling on the public to help with the following steps: 1. The Deonar abattoir must close immediately until new management is installed and can ensure the laws are met. Deonar should not operate until guidelines as suggested by the WSPA and HSA slaughter expert team, as well as proper stunning and halal procedures, are implemented. Deonar management and staff must be adequately trained in animal welfare, handling and slaughter; and animal protection laws must be strictly enforced. 2. The Deonar management must call on the police and government to help in enforcing laws and ensuring humane treatment. The Deonar management should welcome the assistance of expert organisations like WSPA and HSA, including obtaining accreditation of procedures from them. |
