Over 60,000 Andhra Pradesh And Telangana Schools To Incorporate Humane Education

Posted on by PETA

The state governments of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have issued notifications asking all government schools to integrate PETA India’s humane-education programme, Compassionate Citizen, into their official school curricula.

Nearly 35,000 schools in Andhra Pradesh and 28,000 schools in Telangana will benefit from the programme, which is PETA India’s version of PETA US’ internationally recognised Share the World programme and is designed to teach 8- to 12-year-old children how to understand and be kind to animals. It can be incorporated into language, arts, science, social studies, environmental, and values education curricula.

It’s well documented by psychologists, sociologists, and law-enforcement officials that violence against animals by children is often an early warning sign of future acts of violence towards humans.

Compassionate Citizen is endorsed by the Animal Welfare Board of India and the Central Board of Secondary Education. In February 2016, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan issued an advisory to all its schools across India to integrate the programme into their official curricula, and it’s also been included by the government schools of Chandigarh, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Kerala, and Madhya Pradesh. PETA has shared Compassionate Citizen for free or used it in workshops with more than 164,000 other schools.

The programme consists of a teacher’s guide, reproducible activity sheets, a reading unit, and a 28-minute video – all devised to help students use their reading and reasoning skills to examine the complex lives of animals, how our relationship with them has changed over time, and how to respond when animals are in trouble. The programme is available in English, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Malayalam, and Telugu and can be made available in other languages if needed by enough schools.
