Succumbing to PETA’s pressure, the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) has made changes in the syllabus of Life Science for Class VI students. Class VI textbook—Elements of General Science—encouraged children to do cruel things against animals like experiments including suffocating guinea pigs to understand the importance of air, not giving water to birds to understand the need of water for sustaining life.PETA India’s Dharmesh Solanki alleged that these activities are in contravention to Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. PETA lobbied by writing a letter to the Union Human Resource Development Minister, Arjun Singh. Finally, the board ordered the modification in the syllabus.
