Tell British Officials to Stop Supporting Canadian Bear Slaughter

PETA Europe is calling on Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles and the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) to stop using real bear pelts to make headpieces for the Five Guards' Regiments. Bears are cruelly killed for their hides. They are either shot during hunts or ensnared – sometimes for days – in traps before hunters finally come along and shoot them.

Bears aren't crops to be "harvested". They are individuals who live in families and feel pain and terror when they are hunted down and fired upon and when they are injured and dying. There is no excuse for killing these magnificent animals and no excuse for profiting from their suffering. Because the MoD is willing to pay for bearskin caps, bears are being slaughtered.

Part of this cruel "tradition" is kept alive in order to amuse tourists. Regardless of their nationality, most compassionate people are horrified when they learn that Great Britain – a country which has banned fur farming – shamelessly supports the slaughter of bears in Canada so that their skins can be shipped over for The Queen's Guards' caps.

The bears need your help! Please contact the British minister of tourism, as a potential tourist, and let her know that Britain can never be referred to as "Great" as long as it continues to allow bears to be killed. Please send polite comments to:

Please also take a moment to write to, call or fax the British ambassador to India. Tell him there is no justifiable excuse for bear slaughter and ask him to intervene immediately in order to stop the use of bears for The Queen's Guards' headpieces. Please send polite comments to:
