It is illegal to beat, kick or overload animals; transport animals in vehicles that cause suffering; deprive animals of food, water and shelter; sell abused animals or kill an animal in an inhumane manner. The transport and slaughter of cows, buffaloes, sheep, goats and other animals in India violate all these laws, yet abuses are rampant. Bribes encourage police officers, politicians, veterinarians and other officials to look the other way.

Please write to Prime Minister Vajpayee today asking him to take steps necessary to ensure that animals are transported and slaughtered in a lawful manner and to raise the penalty for violations to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960 (PCA Act 1960), such as deliberate tailbone-breaking and overcrowding, from the price of a chapati at a roadside stall to a heavy fine that could act as a deterrent to further cruelty.
