Vivisection Campaigner
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India seeks an exceptionally motivated candidate to fill the post of scientist for the Animal Testing Campaign. The individual in this position must be able to work in India and must have a strong science background and a solid working knowledge of the use and abuse of animals in testing in India. He or she must have superior communication skills, excellent research abilities and the ability to seek, assess and push for the implementation of alternatives to animals in laboratories through meetings, papers, articles and negotiation. The successful candidate must have excellent English writing skills and must speak Hindi fluently. He or she must also have meticulous attention to detail and a strong commitment to replacing animal experimentation with non-animal testing methods. The post is based in Pune.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
- Research and interpret animal protection legislation related to animal testing
- Investigate cruel teaching, training and testing methods that can be replaced by non-animal tests
- Obtain the necessary data for factsheets, white papers, reports and other types of correspondence
- Attend scientific conferences and communicate with scientists regarding issues relating to casework
- Work with government and regulatory agencies to obtain information on specific animal tests
- Develop expertise in non-animal testing methods
- Meet with corporations, government officials and others to increase the use of non-animal methodologies and decrease the use of animals in experimentation
- Strategise and help develop campaigns and public awareness projects related to animal testing
- Answer correspondence regarding animal-testing issues
- Analyse technical papers and translate scientific terminology into lay terms for use in research projects
- Act as a media spokesperson on animal testing issues
- Give talks or presentations on animal testing issues at universities or other institutions, as needed
- Attend conferences to put forward non-animal testing challenges and information, as needed
- Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor
Qualifications:
- Degree in a science field and a minimum of five years of relevant experience
- Proven familiarity with and the ability to apply medical and scientific terminology
- Demonstrated ability to conduct in-depth research
- Proven exceptional writing skills in English
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proven tact, diplomacy and negotiation skills
- Proven ability to make sound, independent judgments
- Demonstrated ability to handle a variety of issues simultaneously
- Ability and willingness to travel
- Vegetarian, preferably vegan, lifestyle
- Supportive position vis-à-vis PETA India's philosophy and the ability to professionally advocate PETA India's positions
