Mumbai - Despite facing stiff competition from hotties like John Abraham, Bryan Adams, Pamela Anderson, Joaquin Phoenix and Diya Mirza, Bollywood made a clean sweep of last year’s inaugural online poll conducted by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) when more than 15,000 visitors to PETAIndia.com crowned actors Amitabh Bachchan and Esha Deol the ‘Hottest Vegetarians Alive’. This year’s contest promises to be even steamier than last year’s. Hot on the heels of our hot-vegetarian reigning royals are supermodels Yana Gupta and Christy Turlington, musicians Sir Paul McCartney and Shania Twain, actors Richard Gere, R. Madhavan, Aditi Govitrikar and Mahima Chaudhary, designer Stella McCartney (Sir Paul’s talented daughter) and many more.

Why are vegetarians hot and meat-eaters not? There’s nothing beautiful about the heart attacks, strokes, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, cancer and other diseases associated, in study after study, with eating flesh. Some of our nominees show that, even into their 50s and 60s, a vegetarian diet keeps them trim and attractive. Also, vegetarians have a performance advantage in the bedroom: The artery-clogging fat and cholesterol found in meat and other animal products impedes the flow of blood to all the body’s organs, not just the heart.

‘There’s no hotter combination than passion and compassion’, says PETA India Chief Functionary Anuradha Sawhney. ‘The trend toward a healthy and kind vegetarian lifestyle is starting to spread to every corner of the country.’
