New York People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the largest animal rights organisation in the world, will honor Indian supermodel John Abraham with a Humanitarian Award at PETA’s 21st Anniversary and Humanitarian Awards Party on September 8th at the prestigious Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City.
John is being recognised for his outstanding efforts to end animal suffering. As one of the stars of MTV Asia’s It’s My Life, John took every opportunity to educate others about animal rights. John made his film debut in Compassionate Citizen, a humane education video launched last week which is teaching thousands of schoolchildren throughout India to be kind to animals.
John was instrumental in enlisting top fashion photographer Atul Kasbekar and model Aditi Govitrikar to participate in the “Let Vegetarianism Grow on You” advertisement for PETA, for which John and Aditi posed covered in outfits made of fresh vegetables.
It disturbed John to see the growth of factory farming in his hometown: “After seeing new chicken farms outside of Mumbai, it got me thinking: I love animals, so why would I eat them? Now I’m vegetarian, and I feel better than ever. I’ve especially valued the muscle-building and fitness advantages of a veg diet,” says John.
In addition, John personally lent a tender hand to an abused, ailing horse who was found collapsed on the side of the road. John helped comfort and calm the animal during her last hours.
Because of John’s kindness and compassion, he will join celebrities Paul McCartney, Pamela Anderson, Alec Baldwin, Brigitte Bardot and many others at PETA’s unforgettable star-studded evening including a cocktail reception, a sumptuous vegan dinner and desserts, musical entertainment and, of course, the awards ceremony.
PETA, with its 750,000 members worldwide, opened its first-ever Indian campaign office in January 2000, with the goal of combining traditional Indian ideals, like vegetarianism, with star power and a youth-oriented campaigning style.
